A First for Africa
The African Small-scale Mining & Kidney Health Summit is a landmark international conference dedicated to understanding and addressing kidney disease associated with artisanal and small-scale mining.
Rather than focusing solely on healthcare or mining, the summit explores the complete ecosystem connecting:
The Summit will bring together more than 500 delegates across the globe including Africa, Europe and North America.

EXPECTED PARTICIPANTS

The Africa Small-scale Mining & Kidney Health (ASK) Summit 2027 has one defining ambition: To produce the Takoradi Declaration—the first regional policy and action framework dedicated to combating mining-related kidney disease caused by heavy metal exposure in Africa. Bringing together leaders from science, medicine, government, industry, civil society and development organisations, the Summit will create an evidence-based roadmap to protect vulnerable communities, strengthen health systems, improve environmental governance and accelerate responsible mining practices across West Africa.
Hosted in Takoradi, Ghana, at the heart of one of Africa’s most active mining regions, the Summit will transform scientific evidence into practical commitments through the adoption of the Takoradi Declaration—a landmark multi-stakeholder framework designed to guide action, investment and accountability long after the conference concludes. The ASK Summit is therefore not simply an international conference. It is the convening platform through which Africa will launch a coordinated regional response to one of its fastest-growing environmental and public health challenges.
Our Vision
Guided by the principles of Advancing Science. Shaping Policy. Protecting Communities, the ASK Summit mobilises scientific research, policy leadership, strategic partnerships and community action to reduce the burden of mining-related kidney disease while advancing responsible mining practices and environmental justice across Africa.
Our Mission
To improve kidney health outcomes across Africa by fostering collaboration between science, healthcare, government and the mining sector through research, education, innovation and evidence-based policy.
