TAKORADI DECLARATION
THE LEGACY OF ASK SUMMIT
The defining outcome of the ASK Summit will be the adoption of the Takoradi Declaration—a landmark regional commitment that will establish a shared framework for protecting kidney health in mining-affected communities across West Africa. Developed through dialogue among governments, healthcare professionals, researchers, mining stakeholders, development partners and community representatives, the Declaration will translate scientific evidence into measurable policy commitments and coordinated regional action.
The Declaration is intended to become the principal reference framework for addressing mining-related kidney disease in Africa, providing governments and institutions with a common agenda for implementation, collaboration and accountability. Rather than marking the conclusion of the Summit, the Takoradi Declaration will mark the beginning of a long-term regional movement.
THROUGH THIS DECLARATION, WE WILL:
Develop national and regional action plans aligned with this Declaration. Mobilize resources and partnerships to deliver our commitments. Track progress and report annually on implementation. Engage and empower communities as partners in solutions. Strengthen collaboration across borders for a healthier, more resilient West Africa.
We, the undersigned representatives of governments, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, health professionals, researchers, civil society, traditional leaders, communities, and development partners, assembled at the Africa Small-scale Mining & Kidney Health Summit (ASK 2027) in Takoradi, Ghana, recognize the urgent threat that heavy metal exposure from artisanal and small-scale mining poses to kidney health, the environment, and sustainable development in West Africa.
